Which Gravotech products for wood gift making?

Wood laser cutters offer extreme precision and fast execution. Known for delivering consistently polished results, they are highly valued for their ability to produce intricate details and a wide variety of designs. While the cutting process can leave slightly darkened edges, this effect is often minimized but can also be embraced as part of the desired aesthetic. Laser technology is ideal for both deep engraving and high-contrast surface marking. For professionals focused on wooden gift making, there are many wood laser engraving possibilities, including texts, logos, or even high-definition photos.

  • LS100: Compact and versatile, perfect for producing a small series of wooden objects cut and engraved with precision.
  • LightSpeed 300: Suitable for larger formats, allows production of larger pieces or handling multiple projects simultaneously.
  • LS900: Designed for more intensive production, offering a large working area for quick cutting and engraving of large wooden objects.

Mechanical engraving is particularly well-suited for solid wood and thicker materials. It allows for variable engraving depth and provides a robust, traditional finish. It achieves relief effects that are impossible with lasers, but with less precision for fine details. It offers a distinct quality for wooden gift-making projects that require 3D textures.

  • IS400: Versatile and precise, perfect for engraving and machining small to medium-sized wooden objects with high-quality results.
  • ISx000: Industrial solution, ideal for machining large wooden pieces and mass production, with the capability to work on thick and hard materials.

Wood comes in various types, each with unique properties that affect the final result. In fact, beyond the species chosen, each plank of wood has its own natural grain, giving your creations a unique character.

Our Laser Wood is a premium plywood available in four varieties: Birch, Oak, Beech, and Walnut, with thicknesses ranging from 0.4 mm to 4.5 mm (1/64'' to 11/64'').

For wood laser engraving and cutting, proper fume extraction is essential. Effective airflow management directly impacts the cutting quality, it also keeps the machine clean and extends its service life. Our extraction systems are equipped with filters for both fumes and odors.

A well-designed cutting table facilitates better extraction. Using masking paper is another option to prevent cutting residue from marking the edges with your wood laser cutter.

Mechanical cutting, on the other hand, produces a significant amount of wood shavings. A reliable chip collector helps maintain a clean workspace and keeps your equipment in optimal condition for continuous use.

What makes wood a top material for engraved objects?

AESTHETIC

Wood is known for being a noble and durable material, highly sought after for its aesthetic qualities. It is also a material that can be combined with others, such as acrylic or aluminum, to create a modern and contemporary look.

VERSATILE

Sitting between solid wood and MDF, plywood is particularly prized for its versatility and ease of cutting. It is an ideal solution for crafting small objects, models, or decorative pieces.

In addition, wood allows easy gluing, interlocking assembly and folding by cutting out hinges.

It can also be painted, varnished, or even printed on.

ECO-FRIENDLY

Sustainably sourced wood can also be an environmentally friendly and recyclable solution for making wooden objects.

Why print wood before cutting it?

Printing on wood before laser cutting adds a layer of visual personalization and creativity.

This technique combines the aesthetic benefits of printing (vivid colors, complex patterns, photos, etc.) with the precision of laser cutting.

  • Richness of patterns: Printing allows for the addition of textures, gradients, or designs that are impossible to achieve with engraving.
  • Increased customization: Specific visuals, such as logos, photos, or drawings, can be printed before precisely cutting around them.
  • Time-saving: Once printed, the wood can be directly cut following the contours of the design, optimizing the production flow.
  • Premium effect: The combination of printing and cutting provides a more sophisticated and attractive finish, perfect for high-end items.

FAQ: The 4 questions most frequently asked of our experts

🔽What types of wood can be lasered?

While MDF is popular for its low cost and smooth surface for painting, experts recommend plywood (Birch, Oak, Walnut) for high-quality creations. Plywood offers a genuine wood-grain aesthetic and emits fewer particles during cutting. It provides a more premium look than reconstituted wood and is highly versatile for a wide range of decorative projects.

Bamboo, a material similar to wood, can also be engraved and cut much like plywood; however, the results are more inconsistent in terms of contrast.

🔽What is the maximum thickness of wood I can cut with a laser?

It all depends on the power of the laser used: with a 40W laser, you can cut through a 6 mm (0.236'') thickness, while an 80W laser can cut up to 10 mm (0.394''). For assembly, you can use interlocking joints for a clean finish without glue (requiring high precision), opt for gluing, or choose kerf bending.

🔽Can I engrave curved wooden objects?

Yes, curved wooden objects can be engraved using a cylindrical attachment (rotary device). This accessory is available for both Laser and CNC machines, allowing you to personalize rounded items such as rolling pins, napkin rings, wooden kitchenware, or cylindrical toys. This significantly expands the creative possibilities for wooden gift-making.

🔽What are the best CNC and wood laser cutting machines?

The LS900 laser table is the top choice for gifts due to its large working area and the high-contrast "burnt" look that is highly aesthetic on wood. It is perfect for serial production of wine boxes or custom trays. For heavy-duty cutting or deep 3D machining of solid wood, the ISx000 CNC table delivers a robust, traditional finish.
